steve schmidt, senior adviser on the mccain '08 campaign and joy reid, nbc contributor. this latest video about him wanting to send president obama as he puts it back to kenya was pulled out today. it's been around. they highlighted it. and then the senator put out a statement saying he doesn't -- his father doesn't speak for him. >> it's so precious when the guy whose son was born in canada does birther jokes. that's adorable. it highlights without the media officially there kind of the way conservatives are talking amongst themselves. and that really is the problem. the problem is even with the 47% video, this was mitt romney being asked by somebody in the audience how can we get those moochers to stop taking our tax money and living on the dole. he answered that question with 47%. the conversations taking place inside the conservative base shows ugliness outwardly. >> steve schmidt, the other thing in that video is a strong sense of superiority. we are superior people to the other people we're talking about, be it the president of the united states or anyone that votes for him. >

by chatting them up, you know, talking to them. national correspondent steve centanni is live in washington. steve, what do we know about this? >> reporter: well the government accountability office, gregg, has issued a report and basically says the government's wasting money with a program to pick out suspicious people lining up at security checkpoints. it says there is no credible scientific evidence that an officer can spot someone who is a real threat just by looking for unusual behavior. tsa has spent about $900 million on the program since it was launched in 2007 and dedicated 2800 personnel to the project. the report concludes that until tsa can provide evidence demonstrating that behavioral indicators can be used to identify passengers who may pose a threat to aviation security, the agency takes the risk of funding activity that is have not been determined to be effective. the report also indicated investigative reports of racial profiling with the program and found evidence that was occurring as well, gregg. gregg: what is the tsa saying about this, steve? >> reporter: they defend

if there is no other option simply to send a message to constituents and the white house. other democrats like steve cohen had been blunter, calling the controversy over keeping existing plans the last straw. this is what cohen told nbc news. sometimes they, referring to the white house, take us for granted. we are fighting for this. they need to come up with something where many of us will support the upton bill. a senior house democratic staffer estimated to politico that the number could be anywhere from 20, the usual, when there is conservative democrats who vote to 100 depending on the circumstances. it's clear whether the white house likes it or not, they will have to let democrats in congress make the fix. they can't do it themselves. the trust is just not there. democrats need their pound of flesh on this one. democrats are telling the white house this. we need to be on the record and registering anger with how the roll out has gone so far. we have been with the white house and we are on the ballot next year, not president obama. don't be surprised if the white house endorses something. mayb
